ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Juliana Smith, MD candidate

3rd Year Medical Student | University of California, San Francisco

I participated in the program while I was a high school student in 2012 at the University of Southern California. I’m currently a 3rd-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). I think the most powerful thing I gained from the program was the confidence it gave me to pursue a career in medicine. I cannot thank the program enough for that!

Additionally, I loved it so much that I wanted to get involved as a staff member during my time as a college student at UCLA. In the summer of 2015, I served as a RA and program coordinator, organizing all student activities outside of the classroom for our program at Harvard University. I am so grateful for this experience as it helped to build my leadership skills. I highly recommend that you consider attending the MPP program and taking advantage of everything the program has to offer.

If you had the opportunity to talk to a future medical school student, what would you tell him/her?

If your current circumstances don’t match your dreams, meaning you don’t have the grades, finances, knowledge, experience, etc. to pursue it, don’t let that discourage you. You need help on your journey. There are several people who have had obstacles similar to yours and have accomplished exactly what you want to do. You have to find these people and come up with a game plan. Programs like MPP can provide the support and guidance that you need.

Goal

The Medical Physician Preparation (MPP) Academy is designed to increase the number of high achieving students who are academically and mentally prepared with the social-emotional skills to:

  • Complete a medical or health professional school degree and
  • Become licensed to practice medicine in a medical specialty or health profession (i.e., MD, DO, Physician Assistant, Nursing, Optometry, Dentistry, EMT/Paramedic) that provides a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives.

Mission Statement

Committed to Closing the College and Career Aspirations – Attainment Gap for All Students

Our mission is to “close the college and career aspirations – attainment gap” by empowering students with the tools and mindsets to define their life’s purpose/career path, breakthrough their barriers and complete a postsecondary education degree or career training certificate or licensure program, specifically to enter careers that provide a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives.

College and Career Aspirations – Attainment Gap: The distance between a student’s stated college and career aspirations and the realization of completing a post-secondary education degree or career training certificate or licensure program, specifically to be prepared to enter high skilled careers or trades.

WHO WILL BENEFIT

MPP is open to high achieving elementary (4th & 5th), middle school, high school, and undergraduate students from all communities across the United States and globally.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS (4th & 5th)

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS (6th – 8th)

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (9th – 12th)

COLLEGE STUDENTS (Freshman – Seniors)

3 Types of Students That Get Admitted to MPP

There are three types of students that apply and get into MPP:

MPP Student 1:

Students who have already committed to pursuing a career in medicine and healthcare but are unsure of their future medical specialty or career path. Students decided to attend MPP to gain more exposure to the field by exploring different career paths and medical specialties to help them discover the type of medical doctor (MD | DO) or health professional (nurse practitioner, physician assistant, optometrist, etc.) they will become in the future.

MPP Student 2:

Students who have considered a career in medicine and healthcare but have not had much exposure to the medical field. Students decided to attend MPP because they want to explore and experience the medical field first-hand to determine if a career in healthcare is a good fit for them.

MPP Student 3:

Students who have not considered a career in medicine and healthcare and have not had any exposure to the medical field. Students decided to apply to get hands on experience and exposure to the field of medicine and healthcare to determine if it’s the right career path for them.

Top 10 Reasons Why Students Decided to Attend MPP

1) Start preparing early academically for a future career in medicine and healthcare through participating in a year-round systems-based pre-med and medical/health professional school readiness curriculum.

2) Gain hands-on clinical skill techniques and diagnostic training from different medical specialties and careers in medicine that are commonly performed in patient care scenarios. Skill labs help students identify their top 5 medical specialties that best fit their personality, interest, and skills.

3) Learn about the different types of professional careers and medical specialties (i.e., Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, EMT/Paramedic, etc.) to help students discover their top 5 career specialties of interest that will provide a sense of purpose and meaning in their future lives.

4) Receive social-emotional skills and resiliency training to break through barriers on students’ roads to success in pre-med university coursework and medical school or health professional school.

5) Develop study skills, learning techniques, and increase non-cognitive skills, behaviors and attitudes critical to meet demands of university coursework, healthcare training, and career success.

6) Understand how to navigate the college admission process, become a competitive applicant, and possess the core competencies required to successfully complete medical school or health professional school.

7) Learn from diverse experts, including world-class instructors and healthcare professionals (MDs, DOs, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Optometrists, Dentists, EMTs / Paramedics, etc.).

8) Explore college life and the first year of medical school or health professional school (i.e., nursing school, optometry school, dental school, etc.).

9) Meet peers from around the globe, learning to work collaboratively with a team.

10) Benefit from a mentor that provides professional guidance and personalized career development support.

MEDICAL SPECIALTIES TO EXPLORE/STUDY AT MPP

There are many different types of doctors and medical professionals, and they all have different areas in which they are experts. Some may study medicine in a broad and general way, like a primary care doctor you may visit for a checkup. Others may focus on specific parts of the body or diseases. These areas of expertise are called “specialties.”

Examples: Cardiologists work with the heart. Pediatricians focus on treating injuries and illnesses in children. Nurse Practitioners bring a comprehensive, whole-patient perspective as they provide primary, acute and specialty health care to patients of all ages. Physician Assistants focus on patient education, preventive care, and managing chronic health issues.

MPP students will learn what a specialty is and the different types of specialties and careers in the medical field to help them discover their top 5 medical specialties to consider as a future career.

Why does MPP expose students to a wide variety of medical specialties and careers in healthcare?

Choosing your medical specialty or healthcare career is an important decision that requires reflection, research, and time to determine a specific area of medicine to practice that fits your personality, interest, and skills. Many medical students consider their specialty choice as their most difficult professional decision. Such an important decision takes time, and procrastination only adds to the stress.

Different medical specialties and careers in healthcare require unique diagnostic techniques and clinical skills to deliver patient care. At MPP, students will explore a wide variety of specialties through our hands-on clinical skills training labs and rotations to identify their top 5 medical specialties that best fit their personality, interest, and skills. By discovering their top medical specialties of interest prior to attending medical or health professional school, it will help them choose a medical career path that provides a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives.

CLINICAL SKILLS TRAINING LABS & ROTATIONS

In each medical science course at MPP, we integrate our medical science foundation curriculum with hands-on clinical skills training (techniques and diagnostics) to expose MPP students to a variety of clinical skills that are commonly performed in patient care scenarios from different medical specialties and careers in medicine. Additionally, MPP students will discover different types of doctors and medical professionals (i.e., Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, EMT/Paramedic, etc.) while practicing clinical skills.

“Pre-Med & Medical School Readiness”
Program Curriculum

Our “pre-med and medical/health professional school readiness” curriculum is designed to prepare MPP students for a future career in Medicine and Healthcare.

MPP students learn through a systems-based medical/health professional school readiness curriculum aligned with hands-on clinical skills and experiences. Students will also explore a variety of medical specialties and careers in medicine and healthcare.

Medical Sciences Curriculum

Our “medical sciences” curriculum is an organ systems-based curriculum that organizes the teaching of medicine by systems within the body, like the digestive or respiratory systems. This approach, which mirrors how medicine is actually practiced, gives you a big picture look at the physiological, anatomical, and biochemical processes of an organ system all at once. MPP students will also be introduced to a variety of clinical skills and careers in medicine and health care.

Clinical Skills Training | Explore Medical Specialties and Careers in Medicine & Healthcare

During the academic year program (AYP) and summer intensive program (SIP), MPP students will focus on:

  • Acquiring clinical skills and experiences
  • Exploring a variety of medical specialties and careers in medicine and health care.
  • All clinical skills courses offered at MPP are organized by systems of the body.
  • Clinical skills training will be integrated with all pre-med classes offered each term at MPP.
  • MPP students receive Certificates of Clinical Skill Competence, which serve as a performance validation of the skills and knowledge gained through the clinical skills training lab at MPP.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

CLINICAL SKILLS & SIMULATION LABS

Hands-on Clinical Exposure & Experiences

Clinical Skills Labs at MPP are in-person sessions offering hands-on clinical experience alongside peers and faculty mentors. In the clinical skills and simulation lab, students learn and practice their patient care skills in a safe, collaborative atmosphere.

The goal of the lab is to offer students an introduction to the clinical skills that are commonly performed in patient care scenarios by practicing medical doctors and health professionals. An early exposure to these procedural tasks permits the development of competency-based training.

AYP PROGRAM FAST FACTS MPP PROGRAM
  • Clinical experience is critical to your pre-med/health portfolio, and medical school/health professional schools will expect to see clinical experiences reflected in your application for admission.
  • Gain hands-on clinical skills with common procedures and techniques, exploring a wide variety of medical specialties in the process.
  • Practice patient care by interviewing, examining, diagnosing and treating patients as an EMT, NURSE, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, and MEDICAL PHYSICIAN.
  • Medical Simulations are used at MPP to give students authentic hands-on experiences that represent the challenges of patient care without putting real human patients at risk. The simulations use manikins, procedural task trainers, standardized patient actors, and various computer-based applications.
  • MPP strategically uses real-life simulations to offer experiential learning based on real patient cases. Simulations create a safe, controlled environment where MPP students can practice needed skills and gain confidence without the fear of harming a patient or delaying diagnosis and treatment to patients. The simulations help MPP students learn to identify ideal clinical management decisions and see the future implications for patients.

MPP Uses Virtual Reality (VR) Simulated Medical Training

  • MPP students are immersed in simulated environments and are able to engage and interact in a way that feels real through Virtual Reality (VR) Simulated Training.
  • VR has the unique capability – more so than any technology that has ever existed – to let users suspend their disbelief and learn from experience in the same way as real life.
